I didn't even know there were 9mm red diodes. Are these diodes better at producing a beam over distance than red c-mounts?

They need FAC as much as C-mounts do, they are basically the same in therms of beam profile (TEM 33 and such)

Easier to mount in 9mm housings, but, lower powers available.

The diode package is just that - a package. The laser die (as well as auxiliary optics, of which the package generally has none) determine beam characteristics. Some 3mm cans will have worse beams than c-mounts.

However, larger dice generally need larger packages, and larger dice usually have worse beams.
