WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Read more info in the forum. And yes you could get the diode from that dvd drive but it wil be useless if you are going to use it for making burning laser

As Sennheiser said, the diode inside of a DVD reader is a low-powered red diode. Not very useful for the average hobbyist. The most I would expect to get out of it would be about 5mW at around 50mA. If you wish to get an infrared diode, then you would need to look inside of a CD reader or burner.

Other than the clues of what the diode actually came out of there is only one way to be sure and that is to power it up. It's likely just a low power red for reading but it is conceivable a diode might have been used that has an IR side as well.
What shape is the diode? More useful; any pics available? How many pins?
As you are starting out, this weak diode hunting is useful work as the same skills are transferable to better understood, stock sleds that you will undoubtedly be destroying to feed your newly aquired habit! Powering them up is also useful for the same reason.
You are obviously aware that IR is a concern and right to be cautious. A safe(r) way to check if there is an IR output is to view the power-up through your mobile phone camera or other digital camera, (Webcam etc), as the CCD sensors pick up IR light. To check your phone can, "see", IR point your TV remote at the camera and push any button. You should see the IR LED light up a blueish colour. Always hold the phone or camera between your eyes and the LD your testing to reduce risks of eye damage.
Always look after your eyes!

thanks for all your help,
I have found out it was ir but only because i tested the power to the ld and the current being used as it was powered on, my phone wouldn't see it for some reason.
I've bought a 200mw red laser pre-built from o-like already and i'm stil waiting for dispatch note/confirmation.
