I though I might as well build my own driver for my first build, so I went out and bought the required parts today. My local electronics parts shop did not have the 1N4001 diodes that are used in this link,Laser driver - It can be done
so I bought some 1N4004 diodes as they were the closest thing they had and were not that expensive. Can I still use these for the Driver? How about the test load? or should I go and buy some online? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, 1N4004's can easily replace 1N4001's for this because the only difference is the PIV (maximum blocking voltage). It should do fine.

They are just fine as Sigurthur said, would also work as test load
for red use 1Ohm 5W resistor and 4x 1n400x's in series.
