Help! My laser is a zombie...

So earlier this month, I purchased a "just add diode" kit (@428mA) and a 12X S06J Bluray Diode In Module W/Leads from 2 of our forum members.

I thought that this would be an easy no-fail build since there wasn't anything for me to screw up.

When I received both items in the mail, the assembly was painless and went "well". I turned on the laser and it burned very well. Burning holes in white paper, smoking the wooden door across the room, etc...

However, the second day I tried to use it, it didn't seem nearly as strong. I assumed that the batteries were low but when I replaced them with freshly charged set, there was no noticeable difference.
Over the next couple of days, the laser went straight downhill, getting weaker and weaker until it could only burn holes in dark very thin plastic when focused to a point.
I've been very careful to keep the duty cycle under 60 seconds but I figured that I had "LED'd" the diode anyway.

After that, I didn't fool with the laser much at all until a couple of days ago.
That's when I turned it on, and realized it was noticeably brighter. It wasn't nearly as bright as it was at first, but it would burn white paper when focused and easily burn through a cd case.
But again, that didn't last long.

Over the next 2 days, it lost it's power again and is now the weakest it's been.

I've used 3 sets of batteries so I don't believe that to be the problem.

I don't know if it's dead now, or if it's just undead ready to come back to life tomorrow or what.

I hate to be spoonfed, but now I'm extremely frustrated with it and completely at a loss of what to do with it.

Can you take a picture of the raw output of the unit without the lens in shined on the wall?

Also what lens are you using?

I have a glass lens and a "g2" lens from another 405 purchase.

Yea I think you got a bad diode I mean there are clear signs of facet degradation u probly shouldn't have gone gung'ho with the current till you knew what it could do

Yeah you were approaching the upper limit of current with this diode,

Here are Morgans figures for this diode..
Vf------mA----mW
4.01----50-----38
4.35----75-----81
4.62----100---121
4.88----125---166
5.08----150---209
5.27----175---255
5.41----200---296
5.53----225---337
5.64----250---381
5.73----275---418
5.81----300---462
5.88----325---503
5.93----350---537
5.99----375---579
6.04----400---617
6.08----425---656
6.11----450---692
6.15----475---728
6.18----500---767

At 438mA its pushing it, most people go lower, for longer life.

Ahh.. I had the understanding that 450+ was the danger zone.
I thought I would be safe at 428mA.
At the very least, I thought I get more than one hour out of it!
