if the diode is Long Open Can (long chip) = 450mA is a good current (i have done one in the past and it's still alive)
if the diode is Short Open Can (short chip) = 320mA should be good (300mA if you are paranoid ) just kidding

EDIT: I just found that this drive is 8X DVD... Manufactured 2005... i guess it's even lower power than the short open can...
I don't think it's worth it unless you want to improve yourself in diode harvesting...

Agree with foulmist, you can leave it in working place and buy a better one 815 for about 7 bucks
