Heat pipes in build, or heat pipe as host?

Searched but did not find an answer to my musings: Has anyone ever built a host with heat pipe(s) built into it to increase heat flow... say to help carry heat from the front heat sink to the handle portion of the host (and thence into the hand)? Or, might there be a way to build a host that is in itself a heat pipe for the diode/module/sink? It might be too much trouble for anything except a very high power build, or even a lower power "micro" build, but figured I'd throw it out there for consideration/go/no go/ridicule/deletion etc.

I don't think heat pipes work very well unless you get above a certain temperature.
The active component is only dissipating 8W or less. Aluminum works fine.
 
I've thought about it. One day when I get some more time on my hands (my school schedule is pretty crazy this semester), I was thinking about modding a flashlight to add in some head pipes and attach them to a heatsink. Then I could have some neat copper pipes lining the outside of the host, leading down to the main grip.
 
I tried this once years ago using copper heat pipes. It didn't go so well (mainly because I didn't have access to lathe). There are already good hosts out there suitable for high powers, life is too short to create one from scratch.
