HDDVD Drive Diode; just put it into green laser?

Hi,

I bought a diode from a Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive.

But! I dont know much about circuit boards, and i cant find any good tutorials (well there are some, but there are SO many, and they're all different).

So i was wondering, cant i just get a green laser, like this one:

Then just take out the green diode, and place the violet one from the HDDVD drive into there?
Or will it only be 30mW or something?

In a word, no.

One, green lasers don't have green laser diodes, they have IR diodes and a set of crystals to convert the light to green. There's no 1-to-1 replacing there.

So, you'll need a housing to hold the diode, like and Aixiz housing. Use that to hold the diode and focus the light. Then, either build a driver like the LM317 driver that Daedal has posted about, or buy a driver from the Buy/Sell/Trade section such as the lavadrive/flexdrive, or the rkcstr driver (which are both stickied in that section).

And keep reading. Sounds like you've read some, but some of your questions are answered in the FAQ that is stickied at the top of every forum section. Check the stickies in every applicable section, such as the Experiments/Modifications, and the Help/Repairs/Tutorials. There's a sticky in one of those from Spyderz which should help you some as well.

There are several tutorial threads and there are members here who sell pre-made drivers you can see in the stickies in the b/s/t board. There are several different options of drivers, heatsinks, hosts, batteries, etc. Do some research and you should have no problem building a professional laser, as long as you have the patience and skill to do so.
