Hi Guys and Gals,

Just a quick note to introduce myself.

I had a laser some 25 years ago - a 1mW red laser to be precise. It was in a metal box and connected to a loudspeaker. When you played music through the speaker, the laser beam bounced around and was used at quite a few discos.

Many years later, like three months ago, I ordered a 100mW green laser from a site in China as a pointer on the premise that there would not be a lot of difference between 1mW and 100mW.

After it was too late to cancel I began reading on various Internet sites about these things and thought that the new laser was a little dangerous being as 2mW was considered safe in the UK and I was getting something 50x more powerful. To cut a long story short, I received an email from the company I had purchased the laser pen from informing me they were out of stock and I would receive my order as soon as stocks were available.

A slight sigh of relief then, at £10 I had not lost anything and forgot all about it as one would. But no, this company was true to their word and I received the laser about two weeks ago. I could not have been more surprised and pleased with it.

I now have on delivery a 4000mW (4 Watt) blue laser which according to DHL has now landed in the UK. I have yet to receive it, but am looking forward to Monday 27th April when DHL say it will be delivered. I hope it lives up to my expectations but who knows.

Asked by my friends and family why I want such a powerful laser, my response is simple. It's seeing a beam of light that I know is pure. There aren't many things in life that look so innocent and pure are there!!!

Hi and welcome to LPF! Just wondering, where did you order your 4W laser? 'Cause it may or may not be the said power, especially if it was quite cheap :). If it really is from a reliable source and at 4000 mW, then I wouldn't say the beam is very innocent! ;)

The laser was £150 and I think it is genuine i.e. it was bought via alibaba.

The innocent and pure statement was facetious. With an NOHD of about 240 meters, SFZED of around 1100 meters and CFZED of about 4800 meters, I am well aware that this is far from innocent. Sadly, as blue lasers do not appear as bright when compared to a green beam laser, I wonder if others that purchase such a laser are equally as knowledgeable.

Haha whoops, I just wrote a whole thing on how I think your laser might be an over-driven 2W diode because of the price, and then I realized you said British Pounds, not Canadian Dollars :p. Yes, it does seem legit. Hey by the way, you may want to fill out your profile like location and such, you may get hounded for it because it's an international forum, and since laser laws are different everywhere knowing the location of someone you're helping can really be important.

Well there seems to be a few novices welcoming you so I may as well chime in.

Welcome! If that 4W laser is up to spec (even if it's not) then you will DEFINITELY need some safety goggles.
Eagle Pair might cut it, but with 4W I would go with an ANSI/EN/ISO certified goggles. Don't trust the goggles that come with it (if there are any).

Stay safe and have fun! :)
