Green is more visible to the human eye, and greens can reach high powers now for less than $1k. (It all depends on what you're willing to pay.)
650nm reds (up to 300mW) are good for burning however aren't very bright. It wont be dim, but compared to green it isn't bright.
405nm violet is typically the best for burning as it is readily absorbed by more materials, it's easier to focus, but it's pretty dim.
445nm blue is the best in terms of power, you may find it best if you're willing to put out $150 or so for a good one sold in the B/S/T section. The more power, the better it burns. This also isn't as bright compared to green, however at 1.5W+ power you won't have visibility issues...
Don't forget to buy safety goggles with any of these. It's called PERMANENT eye damage for a reason.
