Ok so I was looking at the nova sight and saw that one of their kits included a few feet of fiber optics and I saw a few pictures of how it looked and I thought it looked pretty neat so I decided to look up suppliers of fiber optic cables and I found this

http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/danise/cart.pl?db=stuff.dat&category=unjacketedfiber

$0.07 a foot so I figured I would buy 100ft of it and 10ft of the 2mm stuff so I could have hopefully a bundle of 20 X 0.25mm fibers about 5 ft-2ft long and one 10ft 2mm fiber just to mess with
Has any body else tried experiments with fiber optics and lasers? If so how hard is it to do?

Thanks
Michael

Well what are you trying to do? If you just wanna shine the laser in it and guide it around, its simple, just do that. If you want to retain beam properties and direct an actual beam around, you're gunna have quite a time. That would imply getting a single mode fiber, focusing the laser into it, and then collimating it again out of the cable. Fun stuff eh?

Don't forget you need some type of fiber coupler to direct all your laser light into that teenie, tiny strand of fiber.

Forgot you will also need a fiber splicing kit with strippers, cutters and polishers in order to attach the fiber to the coupler.

Yes I was going to try to do bolth of thos : ) .... well loks like I will have somting to do then when I get my new alpha 105 laser in a few days : )

Thanks

I was playing around with a fiber optic cable and my X-85, but had no luck focusing a beam out of the cable. When held close to it, I could pop a balloon and make electrical tape smoke.
