Hi i brought the 50mw laser pen from DX. however the batteries seem to run out really quickly, so when i turn it on, the beam shines for like 1 second then goes off.

Anyone else have this problem?

THANKS

edit: does it need warmup time? i always take batteries out after use, and put them in when i use? should i keep them in nomatter if im using them or not?

Well first of all,
WELCOME
to the forum!

Second, you have to know that DX lasers are basically a lottery, you can get underspec, bad, faulty units,
and most unfortnately, you will.

What is happening to your laser is not 'dying out' it's called 'dimming', basically you have a very bad crystal aligment and that results in cold crystals to somewhat work, but once they heat up to a working temperature they get misaligned.
And before you ask, NO.
There is no way to fix it.

If you want a high quality laser, pick up a 50mW green laser from O-like.com
They have a $29 Chrome pen 2x AAA
and $28 blulkier laser running off one lithium battery.

Or if you are up to it, you can buy a laser module from them and replace the module in your green laser, although there is a good chance you won't make it fit without modifications to the housings.

Remember, O-like and Rayfoss are exeptionaly resputable here, and great when it comes to hobbyist lasers and applications, good prices.

If you are looking for exeptional quality, then go to
Optotronics
NOVAlasers
LaserGlow
DragonLasers
Wickedlasers

Stay AWAY (!!) from
DealExtreme
FocalPrice
DinoDirect
if you want your lasers to be high build quality and up-to-spec.

DX and similar are very good when it comes to flashlights that are used for hosts in DIY lasers. Cree lights are fantastic.

Do more reading here on the forum,
go through stickies and FAQ
And enjoy your stay!

Even if the item is faulty?
Yeah.

Shipping fees will cost more than a new same laser.
Which has good chances of being faulty again.

Just pick up a laser from O-like, then you will see what 50mW really looks like.

You are not getting a good laser for cheap.
You can only get DX-quality lasers for cheaper, which is not worth it.

If you want a quality laser, you have to pay for it.
If you think $30 is expensive for 50 mW, maybe you want to take a look at LaserGlow,
$89 for 5 mW laser! Gold plated Lyra series.

I like your list JZ but - wickedlasers + optotronics :)
I forget Opto every time :banghead:
Damn!

Anyhow, it appears that Wicked are recovering from their bad reputation around here, they appear to ship out overspec and quality units lately, (judging from reviews) so I also posted them.
But I do think that 'microprocessor' in Evo pro is BS :D

I'll add Optotronics now. Sorry again.

Yeah, but no matter how overspec a unit is, no way that it can be that expensive.
Upmost respect for those who can afford it, but I'd take that $300 they ask for 100mW Evo, and buy a 300mW green module from O-like ($240), and pay Ehgemus or Bill $60 or so to make me a host I would design for that laser.

Anyhow, I admire Opto and their RPL lasers,
Silver RPL is one of my dreamlasers...
