Can i add a fuse between the driver and diode to protect the diode from over current?

you can but it won't help. fuses takes many milliseconds to blow which would be like years for a diode experiencing an overcurrent.

Someone should run some tests on different diodes using fast acting fuses, although I guess that could turn out to be very expensive, anyway if the diode is already over driven to its limit then certainly it wouldn't work.

at least you wouldn't kill the diode and anyway you could always add 2 fuses one between the diode and driver and one between the driver and battery's.
