I "might" use them for some projects, so I have to have them in hand to see what I can do with them.

I dont really need them at all, so its no problem if you dont want to do it. I wont take it personally.
 
From what read from the link below. You need to be pretty precise and use special equipment to cut cable. I don't know much about fiber optics either. We will have to wait for someone who has experience with this stuff first to chime in.

If he would send you a sample you could try to cut it with a DREMEL.

EDIT: or you first hammer out softly to make a precise cut with a Chainsaw ;)
