Thanks for the compliment Glasserfan! Just to chime in here about the the Stonetek diodes from Greg, this is the best diode to get if you don't feel comfortable harvesting a DVD drive. Can't beat the price either!
With the Sony/Senkat diodes, I like running them at 294mA's. (4.3 ohm resistor in a DDL style driver) This will give you about 200mW's through an AixiZ acrylic lens. Of course, at that power, I would recommend a pretty good heatsink in there.
Hemlock Mike tested the latest diodes from Stonetek. Here's the thread:

It looks like you could safely push them even more. A 3.9 ohm resistor will put you at about 323mA's in a DDL driver. Again, get a good heatsink in there for the higher current builds...
