Probably not worth the bother - its not likely to be capable of anything exceptional performance wise, even if you had a module that fits it.
As for doing tests: i'd recomment at least putting in back into whatever holder it came out of. The thermal capacity of the diode itself is so small that you might overheat it within even one second. Optical output does decrease with temperature though, and wavelength goes up too, so it will likely visually dim before its fried.
