It's focusing the dot at a distance yielding the best divergence.

The "spreading out" of the beam Measured in milliradians.
For example a laser with a divergence of 1mRad, the beam "widens" by 1mm per 1 meter it travels.

Only if its very powerful. Some colors burn better than others.
