Unfortunately I did not find these forums first--for it was Laser Community which I found first and purchased my first laser, an Infiniti 95mW, from TechLasers. I 'think' I got a good laser; but how would I, a noob, know?

So anyway, I took a chance in believing that all these pen shaped greenies are the same size and tried purchasing the optics set from Nova Lasers and it fit! It's a real pain to set up initially, but it creates a really neat effect whilst smoking.

My question is... How much is the line generating lens cutting down on the power of the laser? As in, a laser travels in more or less a straight path, so by introducing an optic to spread it out in an ever growing path, does it lose some of it's blinding ability? I am currently under the assumption that the further it travels, the further the light particles are spreading out and the less 'blinding' it is. But I could be terribly wrong and I'd like to know for more certain than my uneducated opinion.

Currently I only aim it upwards into a corner (how far does a line generating lens travel into the night sky on a 95mW? I'm VERY SUPER UBER CRAZILY paranoid about all planes) of a house or tree; aim my head upwards and about 6 inches from the stream and blow. I suppose this is where I'm about to get in hell, if anything, because I don't wear eye protection with this lens on. I generally like to use goggles in the house, but if I'm walking down the street hitting the tops of trees and doodling on the ground, I tend not to use them. Keep in mind I don't shine it at cars, stop signs, shiny things and definitely not in unknown areas.

As you may tell, I'm rather paranoid about my laser. After I received it, I quickly realised this could be used in terrible ways and after a I lent it to a few people, I have ended up believing no one can touch the laser but me. If you want me to do something, I'll think about it and tell you whether I think it's appropriate or not. Generally they're not good ideas.

Well thank you for your patience. I'm known to run on too long about sorts of things, so I'll cut it here.

Pax vobiscum,
Charming Phoenix

Re: Fist post and a liquid sky/Eye protection ques

The beam will lose it's blinding ability over distance with the fan grating, but it still could cause eye damage from a direct hit for several feet.

As long as you don't get that thing close to your eye you should be fine. You sound like you know how to handle your laser safely and responsibly so as long as you use common sense you shouldn't have any problems.
