Wow that first picture shows its really reflective...

Anyways, I think a keyswitch is enough safety for my liking... anything more gets a bit annoying, but I guess we gotta think of the children :)

The children in question aren't that old really and the missile switch is quite hard to push up...

My work is generally clean ( I should start to make and sell these type of lasers!) my best subject at school is D&T :P

The inside isn't terrible but all I had lying around is heavy gauge wire so its a little OTT ;)

its more complicated than it looks as it has a primary and secondary circuit with a reed relay!


Lol is the heavy metal box also called a safe? :D

I reckon the mark-2 will have a fingerprint reader and 32 digit activation code? ;)

By the time you are adding a retinal scanner i'll start to worry - somehow i can see people using the wrong aperture at the wrong time ;)

MK II im thinking of making already mb something a little more powerful with multiple diodes (you can fit a lot in that box)

and I was thinking one of those military launch things like in the film Golderneye... you know with the 2 key switches and an ID swipe card and possibly voice recognition...

on a serious note anyone got any ideas for my next project? and some place where I can get some of the parts (im UK). Im thinking of adding a green 5mW diode to the existing set up next to the red diode...

Nice work!

I use key switch to lock my 15000V Jacob's ladder.

Not bad at all. Very creative, and possibly a bit safer, too. I guess the next step, for geek points, would be to make it USA legal. ;)

My homebrew burning laser has an aperture cover (think lens cap), keylock, and a tab interlock/kill switch that will disable the laser if it gets knocked off the table, dropped, or moved sharply enough to dislodge the interlock pin. It also has an active output indicator and warning label. This was all required to make it a legal class IIIb in the USA. I won't even get into the registration and notification of its existence that the government wants.

Beyond fitting the legal requirements for safety, it makes the laser look more dangerous, complicated, and also tends to draw attention to it whenever I have it out somewhere. ;D

lol I agree it makes it more dangerous than it actually is :)

I think this is childproof without going too OTT :)

If you have children around you could be doing a good job of covering your ta-ta as it were, legally and remorse. You do good work!

lol i hate to say it but that was one of my main reasons.....

also this is very difficult to turn on the key switch prob woudl have sufficed....

The laser looks cool I was thinking of building one of those minus the protection and key switch.

lol so essentially a box laser?

NB this is now being revamped... power on burner is up a bit

added warnign buzzer for key start.

adding 2 more laser modules (secret! (pics to come when its done))

You say this is your first build? Very nice. The appearance is slick and very clean. Non pointer laser systems have historically always had a power switch to energize the circuit and a key switch safety so having both on your laser is keeping with tradition even though there is really no need to energize a small regulated power supply. Keep up the good work.
