Filter out red laser

Hello guys,

I hope this is the right place where to post this question:

So I got a 532nm red laser, 30mW, this laser should have been IR laser at 808nm but china is not really reliable on sending the correct stuff .

Now the red dot that the laser makes when it hits something is visible, what I need actually is to create a laser sight for my Night Vision (used in Airsoft).

I tried to use a IR filter 720nm that I have on my scope to filter out any unwanted light from LED flashlights but the laser had no problem going throw.

Now the question is, what filter (if exists) can filter the visible dot and leave only the IR sight that I can see using my NVG Scope so the "enemy" wont see the dot on him and also not give my position away.

Wait a minute... 532nm isnt red... 630+nm is red? But otherwise i'm not totally sure about filtering light for an application like this

The dot is very small but I assure you it is red, it might be that the specs are from other lasers pointers. The dot is really small and at 15 m it makes a spot about 5/2 cm din diameter that looks like a really week flashlight on the object.

That "very weak" light you're talking about is IR light. Despite it being very dim. Tht light can be strong enough to cause serious eye damage. There's no way of knowing the output of the laser without a laser power meter but I can tell you that its not a good idea to be shining an IR laser at any person. Especially not knowing how strong it is.

Unfortunately I dont feel comfortable at all handing out any suggestions on how to filter out green light to get solely IR. Its just not a good idea. My suggestion would be to save up and purchase an IR laser that's designed specifically for this type of application. I know they are expensive but if you really want one you will have to save up or figure out how to do it yourself. I would not want to be held liable in the case someone gets injured.

Edit: I'm really confused? 532nm is green but you say it is red? Which is it?

The specs that came with the laser said 532nm, I don't know if the specs are really the correct or from other lasers.

We are aiming for body not eyes, but I respect if you don't want to share the info due to safety reasons. Just for the record an IR laser is not as dangerous as this one ?

If there is no green then its not 532nm. Chinese sellers sometimes do alot of word stuffing to get their products out there. So that may be why it says 532nm.

I understand you aren't aiming for the eyes. Though that doesn't mean that you cant accidentally hit someone in the eye and cause damage.

IR stands for infared. The dot from the laser you bought is probably Near IR. It probably isnt even near the claimed 808nm from the link you posted which is why you can see red light. Though 808nm is somewhat visible, you are probably in the 750nm range which is still IR just more visible than the claimed 808nm. Hence "near IR".

Now back to my previous statement about filtering out the light. Unfortunately now I have an idea what you have and are trying to do I can actually shed a bit more light on it.

What I thought you had was a green laser. The link you provided tells me otherwise. I had originally thought you wanted to filter green light to get only IR. Unfortunately the only way you will be able to use the laser the way you intended is to either reduce the output by adding a filter or get a laser in the 900nm+ range. Though I highly advise against it. As it stands, you have a claimed "300mW" laser. Which is already hundreds of times over the maximum safe eye exposure.

Do yourself and the people around you a favor and stay away from lasers. Never aim a laser at any person.

Mate I understand your concern but e assured some of us have a brain when it comes to safety, we are not kids playing with lasers. And to be sure this laser dose not even melt a 0.05 plastic duck-tape. So this is not a very powerful laser but anyway thanks for your help, I will study the problem on my own and find the best solution if any.

I think what you have there is a very dangerous 808/1064nm DPSS laser. I think either you or someone else has removed the KTP crystal. Either that or it got misaligned.
