Fallout 3 Pew Pew rifle and pistol.

For a while i had been thinking about making up a Fallout 3 laser rifle and pistol.
well i just started playing again and now more than ever i want to make a rifle.

the regular rifle and pistol are no problem as i can just use one LPC-805 (i think:undecided:) for each.

that is the backstory.

here is the real question.

throughout the game you find 2 other types of laser rifles.

The Metal Blaster, which is for lack of better words, a laser shotgun, and the Triple beam laser , which speaks for itself.

now for the metal blaster, im not sure if there is anything that can do what im thinking of, but if there is, please tell.

i was thinking of using 1 LPC 805 (:undecided:?) and putting in a "lense" that would create 7-8 different beams all in the same general direction to give it the shotgun look that is in the game.

now i know it would be easier to just use 3 diodes, but is there a "lense" or "filter" that would diffract 1 beam into 3 beams in the same general direction?

if you cant understand, let me know, i will try to explain it differently.

edit: or whatever diode it is that can run 200-230mw safely, the open can one.
i figure if it is very dark, and in foggy situations, the beams would be a slightly visible.

Do you have a backround in lasers or model making? I can't tell you anything about model making, but I could help with laser stuff.

How I would go about making this project, is make the laser first, then build the gun around the laser bits. Have you ever built a laser before?

I'm not exactly sure what your asking help on. Do you want help with making a laser or making a gun?
 
no, i can make the model and the laser, the thing i cant figure out is how im going to turn 1 beam into 7 or 8 beams. like a diffraction block or something.

that is what i need help with.
 
Oh, then that GB you linked to would work great. Just cut out the inner piece, so you can ditch the paper around it, then somehow glue it into the inside of the gun. I have two different diffraction sheets that I work with and they're great.

However, you would get more than 7 beams from the gun. To get more of a "fallout 3" feel (I play that game, so I know what guns your talking about), I would move the diffraction sheet further down the barrel so that only 8 or so beams escape, not like 20. It's late where I am, I don't have a mouse on me and I'm going to bed, but respond to this thread tomorrow and I'll make you a MS paint description of what I'm talking about. Unless what I just said makes sense. Your idea will work though, so go ahead and order those pieces (go ahead and order 5... they're cheap).
 
oh ok, just wanted to make sure what i wanted to do was feasible.

About the "1 beam divided in 3" thing, yes, there is something useable, but is not a single lens, are 2 "3 faces 120 degrees" prismatic lenses, one negative and one positive ..... just for give you an idea, like the prismatic lenses that you can put in front of a camera for make the 3 images effect, but more precise ..... in first autofocus units, this assembly was used in conjunction with 3 linear sensors and a pc board, in medical and professional instruments.

The first "diverging" prism split the beam aligned exactly in the center in 3 diverging ones, the second "converging" prism, aligned with the first, make them parallels again, and the distance from the two prisms determine the final distance between the beams ..... the whole assembly require to be 1) optically perfect - 2) perfectly matched, paralleled and aligned - 3) perfectly aligned also with the beam ..... this make it a lot costly (much much MUCH more than 3 full modules :p)

The scheme is for a 2-beams splitter (cause i have no 3D function in coreldraw :p), but the principle is the same

That's way too much work! Both of those ideas (in my opinion). What's wrong with a difraction gratting? They're really cool.

Whatever, I'm sure your idea will come out good no matter what you do. Have fun with your gun.:gun:

Edit, about the diffraction grating ..... if you can get two pieces of one of those plastic ones, and put them one in front of the other making them rotate at different speeds, the final effect is wonderful (also if, maybe, is not the better for a gun model :p)

Bonus points to the first nerd to post a screenshot. I'm at work and my game is at home otherwise I'd do it right now.

Oh that makes sense. But they don't diverge that much. For the metal blaster, it should be good.

See above quote. If I recall, the metal blaster shotgun thing in fallout had a pretty wide spread. The diffraction grating should work fine.

A side note: In Fallout 3, if you zoom waaay in on the laser rifle (perhaps by using the sniper rifle scope) you will see what looks like a standard FDA warning label listing it as a "Class 6" laser device. Bonus points to the first nerd to post a screenshot. I'm at work and my game is at home otherwise I'd do it right now.

I've seen that actually! I love fallout 3 :yh:. However, never play the first two... they're painful to play. I would have liked it when I was a little kid and didn't have anything better to do, but they're just too painfully slow to be fun comparing them to today's video games.
