Haha, aye. I don't even have reflow equipment so I think I'm going to shield the body of the IC using a small strip of polished bismuth (poor conductor, good reflector) and hold a yellow hot bar of steel a few mm away from the IC relying on the IR to do the work.
Related: why are all the good VCO chips going out of production! LM566 is now defunct and over $15/chip for spares from asia. There is no direct or other replacement! I hate using a 4046 for a VCO because there is no defined formula for oscillator frequency, just interpolation between datapoints on an old analog graph. That in of itself is an additional layer of fail!
Btw the sample chip in question is the LTC6990.
