Yeah it's possible to dim a laser, in something like an LM317 circuit you could set the max current with a resistor and then put a pot in series with it.

Yeah that right I did this in my unusal host build post with a phr I was able
to control the current with the pot which dimmed the laser I kept the pot turned half way just for pointing and when I wanted to burn I'd just crank the pot all the way up and voilà burning power!

were you able to do this while the laser was still on? or did you do that while it was off? is it still working? have you noticed any degradation? what current is it set at? I wanted to to the same... thanks!
