Ebay $9 blu-ray pens: GREAT!

well its pretty easy to focus once you get the cap off so thats a plus. Simply bent the end of a paperclip to a |_| shape just thinner than the inside diameter of the host. Fits in the lens adjustment notch wonderfully without touching the lens.

Also with it adjusted to a point itll make electrical tape smoke like crazy.
EDIT: OMG Just got it to light a black match, best $10 EVER.

Hmm after lighting a bunch of matches (about 2 packs :P) I noticed something, the lens now has a bunch of spots in it if I shine it on something about 2 feet away the dot is around 2-3in across which makes seeing the spots rather easy. Someone commented on how close it is to an axis, any idea if an axis glass lens could fit on this? Im going to get a small tubing cutter and cut the end off to make adjusting the focus easier. I figure that the lens typically go for like $10 or so and may even help the burning ability of this cheap powerhouse.

EDIT: Here is a wonderful cell phone pic of what Im talking about

I checked mine and the AixiZ lens screws right in. :yh:
I'm setting one up now for a single cell and adjustable focus.

Yes, the 12x30mm one fits. I got mine here: $3.99ea
HighTechDealZ - Aixiz Laser Module - Blank
I'm pretty sure he is an LPF member.

If you wanted to get real froggy, they have a 405 coated lens for $20.
I doubt you gain that much and it would be 2x the cost of the pointer!

Edit: These might be acrylic as they dont state glass. A quick email would confirm it.

Oh cool, Ill grab one. Im not worried on acrylic vs glass, Im sure that lens wont melt its self like this one is doing. Any clue why my lens did this? Im guessing its catching a reflection from whatever I was burning with it and spotting the lens.

I've read that if to close when the match lights small hot particles can damage the acrylic lens or the coating on glass ones.
Yea, at that power you won't see much diff in acrylic vs glass and it won't melt it either.
Shipping isnt bad but you might want to get some extras ot something else that looks interesting to offset any shipping.
Some one on here may have a toasted pointer that might just give it to you if they don't plan to try a repair and strictly buy pointers.

Ill prob get a dust cap (or 2) and maybe one of the 5mw 650nm modules. Here is what she looks like cut down, I should of gone 2-3mm farther down but I can still grip the focus with my fingernails

Also when burning the matches I had the focal point about 5in from the end of the laser which is about 6.5in away from the lens. Also after taking the lens off, some of these dots appear in the raw beam farking weird.

how the hell do you get the cap off? I've tried turning it really hard (with rubber bands for grip) and still i cant get them off :p

Grabbed it with a pair of vicegrips (cloth wrapped) and had to wiggle (a metricf**k ton of pressure) side to side. Still managed to scratch the heck out of it but its not too hard. Dont worry about over doing it, the cap is no where near the diode/lens assembly. Just need either a vice, vicegrips or a pair of pliers and dont be afraid to put some muscles into it. Remember its only $10, if your scratch it its not the end of the world. Once the cap is off just bend a paperclip something like this: You want the part that will be near the lens to either be completely flat (so it doesnt scratch it) or even curved upwards a little. Itll fit nicely in the grooves, its also shaped so you can aim it at something to see how its focusing. Might take a little pressure to make it turn at first there was a tiny dot of glue on mine.

Your lens isn't melting. It takes a lot of power to melt clear acrylic. Heck even at 1W it's not an instant thing.

What you have is a dirty lens from burning crap. Just clean it properly. The stock acrylic lens is just fine for the powers involved here. 40-70mW.

Alright, Ill try cleaning it. Anything Ive burned with it has been roughly 6in away from the lens. I just thought it was weird I got perfect little circles on the lens after burning stuff.

The cap was pressed fit and the lens was threaded.

Here's two pics, only had cell phone camera sorry.

I bought one of these around 6 months ago from a different seller (slightly cheaper), and got one with 40 mW output (measured with a laser power meter). I opened it up and turned down the pot to reduce it to 5mW. I was also able to adjust the focus with the built in lens (the module looked the same).

My only gripe is the difficulty of removing a press fit cap. Does anyone have a nice trick for this?

i cant wait to get mine! i just ordered another green one and a blu-ray. im excited hopefully it will be overspec and tons of fun! also why would you want to make them underpower? if anything i would want them to be overpowered, am i wrong?

You don't really want to be waving 50+mW around in a room full of people with no eye protection. It's also pretty overkill and unsafe to play with your cats with.
