E-bay Argon Lasers

Just noticed that ALL of the JDSU-22XX argon lasers on e-bay are mislabeled. They all say 500mW or .5W. The sellers are going by the "DANGER" stickers for class lllb... not the actual output power(10-40mW for this series).

Yeah, go by the model number. 2214-40MLA for example is 40mW multi-line (they usually do more), 2214-20SL is 20mW 488nm, there are other models denoting different lines and powers. GL, BL etc.

Lots of surplus sellers just go by the label power, which is often far higher than the actual output. May list incorrect wavelengths too. My argon specifies 647nm as one of the wavelengths on the label, which is a krypton line, not an argon line.

This doesn't surprise me at all. It deceives the unsuspecting buyer, but the seller can always use the sticker as a defense against buyers that feel cheated. Caveat Emptor.

Your assertion is a bit harsh. Learn to employ Hanlon's razor. "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance." When it comes to used electronics, it is common for the seller to have little/no knowledge of the item, and are only reporting what they see. With this thread being one of the few exceptions, the type of person that buys a used ion laser is the type of person that knows a bit about ion lasers in the first place.
