Driver built for 445nm A140 Diode






Cool, I made a driver similar to that to power an A140, and it works, but is inefficient. The voltage drop on the LM317 is a whole 3 volts. Also, the output goes through the resistors which generates heat as well. Good pics though

The practice of tying one of the outer leads to the center contact lead fo a pot is a carryover from old radio days (and extensively used in instrumentation circuits) to avoid open circuit conditions when the wiper (the center contactor) gets dirty or you burn or rub a spot through the resistive band. For what we do here, it is insignificant whether or not you do it. Some older, er um, more experienced, tech consider it a best practice kind of thing. Like anselm said, do it or don't, it really doesnt make a difference electrically.
