Firstly, DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU HAVE THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE DANGERS OF IR!!! AS WELL AS BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF DPSS SYSTEMS I will NOT be held responsible for any injuries due to a lack of IR understanding, and this is a warning to NOT ATTEMPT.
That being said, let's begin!
So the other night I was tinkering with a New Wish greenie, this thing puts out a MAX of 0.25mW, it's junk. So if it was dead for good, I'd have no hard feelings. I was messing around, I knew there'd be some sort of crystal assembly, and I was expecting to see that. After getting the top lens out:
I looked and saw what looked like a glob of melted plastic, or dried hot glue (not pics were taken as this was still the tinker stage.) This "blob" was then removed and was then revealed to me as the lens assembly (only title I can think of)
(I'm taking these with my ipod camera and a convex lens from one of DTR's lens assemblies.)
When looking back into the pen, I saw what looks to be the pump diode in a 3.8mm package. I couldn't get a good shot because the lenses wouldn't go that far without getting blurry, so here's the best I have.
I turned it on to find out I was right, and looking at the IR through my webcam, you can see it is an incredible multimode. Look at that bar! And a good majority of it is blocked by the host!
Focusing it gave me a bit more of a dot
Notice the two wings on each side? Not quite sure if that's due to a damaged lens or diode, or what it is (any ideas?) Also note the excessive production of lens flares, I am going to assume that is from the camera not quite registering what the IR is.
So all in all, I'm happy with it, I produced a pretty cool IR laser (with a BARELY visible DEEP red dot) from a crappy pen that really wasn't doing it for me in the first place, and was never used. It melts electrical tape, although I'm not too interested in it's burning capabilities. My camera sees it VERY well so it's fun to watch the bright dot from my computer screen. Here's the finished product (doesn't look much different)
And of course, an obligatory beamshot (using a smoky bottle)
I hope ya'll liked my "build" if you can even call it that, more of a mod. As well as perhaps answer this question, what output are the IR pump diodes in these crappy ebay pens? Just a ballpark estimate. It doesn't burn through, or even smoke electrical tape, just melts it. Even when focused. So any help would be appreciated
Thanks for answers and for viewing! Take care!
