DIY burning flashlight

hey! I know of all the parts i need to construct the DIY flashlight torch (ghetto version of WL torch) I was just wondering if anyone around here has done it before
I want to know if there are other flashlights that work for the build (besides th $20 dx one)

i build a burning one from a maglite 6d and a osrma hlx 250watt with mosfet powerd by 5 18650 serial.

Yes I have, it's fairly easy but first you must understand what makes the WL Torch tick and do what it does and get the real facts.

First off not to be disseminated with the end result since your making a copy of this flashlight, the WL Torch is not 4100 Lumen, it's not the worlds most powerful flashlight and it's not lighting anything up with the energy or heat from the actual light being created like a laser.

What is the WL Torch? It's an aluminum tube (much like a Maglite except not water proof) and cheaper, it's not made with any aerospace/aircraft grade aluminum like they say it is.

What makes it Tick? Well it's a standard 12v 100 Watt halogen being over driven to about 14.4v (exact figure can be found on WL website) they use a glass lens (nothing super special like they claim) and a metal reflector so they wont melt.


So what makes it burn? Well halogen bulbs tend to get very hot especially when being over driven and all your doing really is making a device that will power a bulb to make insane amounts of heat that will cause items to ignite, in terms of lighting your only getting about 500 lummens of VISIBLE light and that's being generous, the rest of the lumens are from other wavelengths that we cannot see so remember your not going to make a super powerful flashlight.

If you still want to make a burning flashlight well here's how.

First you need a flashlight , consider something that will fit D-cells so you have lots of space to work with. Search for some on DX.


Next you need a metal reflector from DX, search it up and look at the specs to make sure it should fit and if it does not but its close you can sand it down.


Glass Lens, plenty on DX that will fit and their dirt cheap.


12v 100 Watt Halogen, I have not seen this on DX but theirs probably some at Home Depot or something and their probably better quality.


Finally you will need a power supply so get some 7v Rechargeable from DX and fit em all inside the flashlight http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3435

Put it all together and you have a not so practical but cool burning flashlight just like if not better than WL Torch at less than a quarter of the cost.
 
I found another person that made this, and they used 2 cr123 batts a 9volt bulb, a glass colminator, and a 19 dollar flashlight on dx
 
Yea I saw that one too but it's not as powerful in burning and brightness as using the WL specs but it should do.

Btw the collimator is useless as it's not the light that's burning but the heat from the bulb so don't waste your time trying to find it or to get it fit.
 
Heavy Offtopic normaly in a laser forum, but iam not aktiv in any specialized flashlight forums.


Here my just finisched Maglite with Osram Xenophot HLX 64657, 24V 250Watt Projektor bulb, powerd by 5x18650.
With light on it runs at 15,6 volt 9,98 amps=~155 watt, fully loaded i have over 20 volt!

I just have this maglite lay around with leaking batteries.
And i want a ceap Burning Monster. ::)

Bulb is a Osram HLX

Runs way underpowered, i have orderd some 12v  8-)

I use this Bulb because it has the reflektor.
Cost less then 3 euro from ebay, plus shipping.

Now iam in trouble with me what will be better for Bulb life, make a crappy heatsink from alloy foil or no heatsink for the bulb itself?
Any conclusions to add?

It runs from 5 lithium wich spend the ~10 amps.

The batterie pack is not constucted to be oaded at once, that means i load complete day after akku lifespan.  :-/
This is overkill for the batteries i know, i guess 5 amps are ok for long term.  :-[

At the moment look around at CPF for another batterie solution.

I dont use the 4,7mohm resestor because working voltage is below. ??

The 18650 i have in stock for dayly use.
This flashlight cost me below 10 euro, if i not count the old broken maglite.

Iam Happy it burns well!  ::)

The stock reflektor gives me flood! For Pic aspheric DX is in use.
Its ok for trowing i use my p7.
