Well i received my rma'd x125 laser about a week ago and i am able to pop balloons up to 17 feet away but when i tried matches, i can't light them from more than a foot and a half away. This struck me as abnormal considering that most x100's can light matches from about 3 feet and my laser is an x125. Well i did several divergence tests using pseudo's calculator, and found the divergence to be at least 2 mRad. My most accurate measurements were .0625inches at 1 foot and exactly .25 inches at 8 feet. I have already returned one laser to nova, should i contact them again?

Are you sure you didn't mess up the divergence calculation? If it can pop a balloon 17 feet away it can't be that bad. Try using other matches. Some matches just suck.

i did multiple calculations one at 30 feet measured around .75 inches, which matches the numbers calculated from the measurements in my first post. Plus im using diamond matches which, im pretty sure are quality matches.

Looks like it's time for another RMA :(

would this help?

[quote author=FireMyLaser link=1206043572/0#0 date=1206043572]I got it today with the goggles :). I must say that it is a really elegant laser. It's bright, looks good and feels nice.
Peak output power: 143.9mw
Average output power: 140.7mw, Novas measurement.

But the dot is about 25mm in diameter at 15 meters :-/. I calculated that it is 2.8mRad (did I make that right?) by using pseudonomen137's mRad calculator (good one there ;)). Nova's specs say <1.2mRad. I'm a bit concerned about it. What do you guys and gals think?

I think your calculation is wrong.
As the beam diameter is 1mm at the aperture and 25mm at 15meters the calculation would be;

(25-1)/(15-0)= 1,6mRad.
Not so bad for a CNI.
Just try to pop a balloon. If you can pop a balloon (black one please) from 3meters do not send it back.
Just keep it and play all day ;)

Has anyone ever had to rma a nova laser twice?

I doubt anyone has... They are a reputable company...

hope ya get ur laser fixed...

CNIs usually have rather bad divergence, but I have found that there are matches that are hard/refuse to light.

I noticed that when burning some matches with my RPL. They were really old paper matches and my laser was actually burning black pits into them without lighting them. Good wooden matches light almost instantly at close range(1-3 feet) and it usually takes 15+ seconds if they are over 10 feet away.

DX black tipped matches are the best

maybe i did get a bad batch of matches. They don't work for anything. I've tried match rockets, bolt bombs, and even the tennis ball bomb with these and neither worked. Come to think of it, when i had book matches they lit easily from two feet. I think im being to picky. When i did laserglows test, i came to a more reasonable 1.58mRad still bad, but pseudo says its typical of cni's. It does everything its supposed to do and pops balloons from quite aways so im happy :)
