Or. We could freeze the gas solid with cheap cryogenics (liquid n2). :-)

I used to be involved in this stuff, and, well, actually using liquid N2 to freeze Xe would be fine, except that manipulating it into something useful would be not as easy as projected.

We used to use it to prime high vacuum pumps for example.

The bottom line is that the equipment to actually be able to freeze the Xe, transport it into a container that you could use for a gas laser, at a purity that might work to lase with, is simply a bit hard for someone who is first learning what a laser is.

For example, the amount of Xe in each flash needs to be added to your "stash", and, then purified. Do you have a good way to freeze the flashes, yet open them and take out your frozen Xe, and, then, put it into something with your other frozen flash gases w/o it boiling on the way, or, your stash boiling, etc?

Also, those bulbs are tiny. The amount of gas your going to get out if one is tiny.

It would probably a more cost effective method to find some big xenon lightbulbs on ebay or even better get in contact with a gas refinery.
 
yes, that is the hard part because xenon is only liquid for 5 degrees celcius. I would probobly have a good chance if the aparatus (container) is also in (l)N2.
i could (and would) ave better luck with a gas refining company.
Could someone point me to specificaly how gas lasers work, the wavelengths, principles, etc.? The wikipedia page is seriously lacking.

You can try to build a flash pumped solid state laser. It will be difficult but possible.

As for a gas laser -- why not especially your pockets are deep and full of green. :evil:
 
Even if you had a bottle of pure Xenon at your fingertips, it would be impossible to build your Xe-Laser. Manufacturers use high vacuum pumping stations which alone cost more than you can pay, and even such a high vacuum pumping station will suck several days before you get the required vacuum. Then you have to "put" in your gas in the evacuated tube without letting any air or dust in and you have to make sure it will be absolutely gas tight and clean and - of course you must be able to measure the exact gas-pressure inside the tube. Then you need special coated mirrors with defined radius and dimensions and you need a way to adjust the resonator, otherwise it will not lase any nW of power. So all in all, just forget about that!

If you would like to build a laser yourselve, then try a nitrogen laser and you will realize, even that can be tricky enough if you don't know exactly how this can be done.

i have access to scientific grade vaccums Pumps/chambers.

Have you considered that it might be better to crawl before you walk or run?

For example, its a little like:

"Can I use aluminum from aluminum foil to make a fighter plane like an F16? I see that they are made mostly of aluminum, so, I think this should work. Can you tell me how to make an F16 from aluminum foil?"

And we say, maybe try a plane made from folded foil, like a paper airplane first?

You can make simple lasers, and learn about how they work without trying to make your first one so technologically challenging that you'd first need to master too many related disciplines.

Once you have the principles, you can build on that, and make progressively more challenging versions, etc.

Is this something that would make sense to you?

So, in this case, my limiting factor is money, and available information, and perhaps the cooling system, depending on how they work for lasers
what do you mean by media?
 
Does the jello have to be room temperature? Because its minus 15 here and I could totally nail frozen jello to a tree.

But really, teams phsysists with degrees and much more resources than yourself have only achieved experimental xenon lasers. I don't get how you think you'll be able to do it.
