Did I harvest correctly?

Ok, so I just attempted to harvest the LD off a DVD RW 16x, and I got two diodes. The thing is that I dunno which diode is the IR diode and which is the red one. One of the diodes is a black square one, and the heatsink had a lens on it. The other looks like the typical closed can LD that would fit perfectly into the axiz module. Upon inspecting the black square diode (which is open can btw) I realised I had broken two of the very thin wires in the LD itself. So now I'm rather worried. Did I waste the IR or the red one? Help.... :-/

Sounds like you destroyed your red burner. :-/

The IR LD should look like this, although some red burners look similar too, some are longer though.

fyi the opencan in that pic does look messed up but i see no damage to the bits that matter (gold wires / die) so it should work

the square black LD was probably the red LD :-/ Which isnt much use anyway even if you did harvest it correctly.

well im not sure of any 16x burners that are open can so i am betting the one that looks like it fits into your aixiz is the one you need to use!
 
Thanx guys! I'll give it a test, although by the looks of what was said i could've wasted the red diode. I suppose an ir burner is still pretty cool though.... And anyone knows if it's ok to glue back the broken golden thin wires?

arent they soldered on orignally?
