Hello people! I currently have 2 lasers---No.1 Romisen lb-030 30mw pot modded
No.2 Focalprice 100mw pen

Well, the No.1 laser died an hour ago.It is very strange , for me at least.
I was trying to measure its current using my multimeter and I put the black multimeter's cable at the one driver's end and the red one at the other end.
Basically , I was trying to figure out how can i measure the current.I didn't know that this could be harmful for the laser...:yabbem:

Now it must have burnt out ,because only the red IR dot is there(I know i must not look at it !)

So now I have only the dull FP 100mw pen ...:yabbem::yabbem::undecided:

I am thinking of buying/making a green/blue ray module hosted in this Romisen host i have.It would be nice if I could also use the heatsink provided with this module.Last but important is that I don't have a big budget...

Please give me your expert opinion on my matter so that I can solve it.
:bowdown::bowdown:

P.S. Damn I loved this laser...After pot-modding it , it became really spectacular:cryyy::gun:

Current measurement done wrong, you shorted out the driver, or better to say = bypassed it, so the battery was directly connected to diode. Guess what happened.

For future reference, measuring of current done between battery and host, not between two points of driver.

Ampermeter is essentialy a zero-ohm resistance, the current flows though it like though a wire. It's like you connected two sides of driver with a wire.
Get it?
Ampmeters are connected in series with what you are trying to measure,
Voltmeters are connected in parralel with what you are trying to measure.

For next project, get a nice O-like green module (highest power you can afford) and install in that host. Should not be a problem, since all greenies look alike, You will need to jump the switch though,
The one on the driver board of the green module, I mean.

Don't get down after a failure.

Don't see it as a dead laser, see it as an empy host -> countless possibilities !

Chin up!

Thanks JZ ! I suppose it is easy to bypass the switch of these modules, right?
How can i get the host's back switch to work???

Any more green or blue-ray ideas????

Solder a wire in parralel to the switch, effectively bypassing it so it's always "on".
This way you can use the hosts' tailcap switch.

What is wrong with your hosts switch in the first place?

Bluray with one lithium ion power supply will need a boost converter to work, so, it will be a bit expensive.

50mW green module at o-like is $30 shipped.

One of those I purchased made 80mW peak. Go figure :)
Worth a shot!

While your measurement methods *might* have been partially to blame, I've highlighted and underlined what the reason for the failure of your laser is.

Sometimes I really think people don't even bother to pay attention to the reasons why pot-modding is bad and WILL kill a laser quite quickly. It's been stated over and over and over all over this forum, yet people always post about how they pot-modded their laser and now it's dead.. boo hoo, cry, moan, etc. There's no mystery here, and the fact that it died is not strange. It's precisely what happens when you pot-mod a laser.

Do not pot mod lasers unless you don't care if they die very fast. Nothing personal to the OP, but I always post about this any time I hear about someone pot modding their laser... not that anyone listens. They'd rather pot-mod anyway, and then come here and complain about it after the laser dies.

How is O-like's 50 mw module beam and burn ability ???
Burn ability minimum, only when focused with external lens - it can burn a little.

Beam is as good as it can be for the price.

What can I say... it's good. I would not reccomend it if it was not :)

Well, it is pot modded about a year now with constant daily use with no problem!
My wrong am measurement killed it....

It's a cheap, risky practice. You might have gotten some use out of yours, if so then congratulations.. no two will have the same results.

It's still a crappy, half-ass way to get a more powerful laser and it is not recommended. No matter what, that's the truth of the matter and it needs to be (and will be) posted every time someone comes here talking about it. With Chinese greenies as cheap as they are, why not just buy a more powerful laser and enjoy a full lifetime?

Hey! Don't be sad. Just learn from your mistakes.
Being sad for something that doesn't have a solution is... stupid. This applies to everything.

Have a nice day!

By the way ElectroFreak is right, ONLY pot-mod a laser if you dont care about its lifetime.
Pot-mod only lasers like DX lasers, they're very cheap, so if it dies you dont lose too much money.
