Dead diode as dummy load?

This is probably kind of a stupid question, but can a dead PHR-803T work as a dummy load for setting the current? I'm 95% certain it can, but I want to be 100% certain.

The usual answer is, "Yes." However, IgorT found some 803T diodes that were an open circuit after they died. So be careful. Test the dead diode to see if it continues to pass current before you set it up as a dummy load.

Well, I haven't measured it, but it at least lights up and gets warm when I put current through it

OK. If it's an "LED" now it should work.

How much current are you putting through it? . . .At what voltage?

Yep, I used my dead "led" diode to set the current for the replacement. Worked great!

If your dead diode reads arround 5V when you hook it to a 9V battery throuh a 100 to 1K ohm resistor, then yes you can use it. Alternately, use a power type white LED and an 14007 rectifier diode in series.

Nitride lasers can fail electrically OK, or shorted, usually when this happens the driver blows 'em open though.

i use a breadboard with a few 1v diodes.. works great
