Could I use an XM-L or XP-G flashlight driver with a 445nm diode? I have a 1w 445 diode, could I use a flashlight driver, or do I need to use a driver made specifically for 445nm lasers?

The voltage of the LED's driver is the same, I would make sure to get one with the proper current, as well.

Laser diodes are a whole lot more sensitive than led's.

Some, *some* drivers could/do work for lasers, but for the most part, you'll end up with a dead diode... which is more expensive than a driver.

So yes, you do need to use a driver made specifically for laser diodes.

With a diode that has isolated pins (separate from body),

you can use the #7135 style current limited drivers.

Each #7135 limits the ground current to 350ma.

Various drivers have from 1 to 8 of these #7135 IC's.

Some new #7135 -38 IC's are now out that have 380ma of current.

These drivers have been reliable if they have decent heatsinking.
