i have one of those cheap keychain red pointers($5). is it ok if i take it apart and put another diode in it? e.g. dvd burner diode?

The circuit board wouldn't be able to handle putting out enough juice and then getting batteries that would actually put out enough power wouldn't make it logical at all. Sorry about that one.

Nope, not possible. I broke my <5 pointer just by trying to take out the module. :'(

Yeah they're correct. The only thing those pointers are good for are making your pets chase the dot. Just don't shine it in there eyes. :P

Those pointers usually are too cheap to even have the laser diode in a decent package, it's a diode on the pcb with a single smd resistor. They burn out very fast at 10mW :)
