The progression of technology continues like it has been. A new color of diode comes out, and suddenly everyone has their panties up in a bunch like the "blue laser apocalypse" is inevitable if we don't do something.

I hate to say it, but what scares me is not the dangerous laser bandits. It's you people that scare me.

If a guy goes into a gun shop, buys a gun, and then proceeds to accidentally shot is dog with it, then tough shit for that guy for being a dumb ass and buying a gun without learning the dangers of handling it first.

Or if a guy buys a can of lighter fluid and proceeds to squirt the fluid directly on an open flame and the can explodes in his hand and burns his face off. Well tough shit for that guy also.

So, in conclusion if someone builds a 1 watt laser with one of these things and bounces it off of a mirror in his house and blinds himself, well you know what comes next.

What you said about the 1W 808nm laser is true.
When I first came here I was also looking for a burning laser. As usual, I saw kipkay's video and started running after lasers.
Then, I was introduced to the IR laser. I have to confess: since I don't have any protective goggles for IR, I was really afraid of buying, specially because it's not visible. Well, my wit spoke louder, and I concluded that it would be really stupid.
I kept learning and reading before buying my first laser.
To sum up: As everyone else said, 1W point'n'blind lasers would be really dangerous if largely available. The bare diodes, I don't know. As HIMNL9 said, it would be hard to find a way to select who is allowed to have them without any kind of "discrimination"

That's my opinion.

By the way, sorry for the bad english.
