Cant seem to unscrew aixiz laser module

I know it does, I am not saying I am going to use a ~200mW laser w/o them... its just... it seems counterproductive. Well, I guess I have to see it myself ;D

Not to thread hijack, but I just tried the snips method on a DVD IR diode + heatsink I had from the same drive, and once I got it out, (without problems) I tried seating it in my AixiZ module.

What I want to know is if I am somehow supposed to get the diode to fit in the original socket, or if I should just Loctite/glue it in place?

(PS: Just realized that probably would reduce duty cycle considerably... :-[)

thanks Xenodius. So if I was to use a solder iron i should just get it warm enough to melt the solder iron and then move the iron away quickly and wipe the solder off or what?

I was referring to desoldering the diode out of the heatsink, personally, snips are a better method from what i have seen.

If you do choose the desolder it however... Like SenKat said, quick strokes @ max temp. Dont think getting solder off is a huge issue.... unless you mean the diode :o

If you are referring to soldering the diode to the casing, AFAIK that is a BIG no-no... Its supposed to be a friction fit. (Meaning you just press it in, but I haven't had luck with that, hence above bolded question)

No i mean about desoldering the little board on it lol. I already have the diode out of the heatsink

For the board... TBH, I just pulled mine off, ::) but I woudn't recommend that.

If there is one thing I have learned in life and lasers, its GET THE RIGHT TOOLS!

You will use a solder-sucker elsewhere, and for 11 bucks, its worth possibly saving 40+... IMHO, but I hate gambles.

Oh! Oh! and WOOOOOOOOOOT! I just pulled the DVD diode out of the heatsink, so its all alone with its long pins, and it still works! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! I am jumping off the walls!

Now I just need to figure out how to get it to stick in the aixiz unit! ZOMG! I even have stars to light once I get it done! HOORAY!

*happy-dance*

cool dude! now we're in the same place aahaa. But i think you push the diode out from the top part with something. If you don't care if it breaks or something i guess you could speed it up by hiting it harder? I dunno. I haven't got mine out yet though because i want to mess around with it more before i whack it off lol.

No, your misunderstsanding my problem-- I already extracted the 5mw diode from the AixiZ unit, I am having trouble getting the new diode in. Theres the silver can on top w/ cover, and then the 5.6mm brass ring around the base. I cant get the brass ring seated in the aixiz unit. Its just too tight. I can get it to sort of stick for about 30 seconds but thats it. And I do NOT want to break my diode! ;D ;D ;D

But yeah, I am PSYCHED! I am trying to figure out where the focus needs to be cause its hard to try and light a match without knowing what your laser is focused at....

LAZORZ ROXORZ!

OHHH OK lol. well I'm just a step behind that counts right? Anyway thats what I'm also trying to figure out. Unless all you have to do focus the laser dot into a small one.

Well, playing with the original 5mw diode, you can focus it to "infinity", meaning the beam is basically the same size at any reasonably short distance, or focus it anywhere from 2 inches to 5 feet... at which point its a glaring pinprick. For burning, you want a pinprick... for fun lightshows, you want infinity.

WHEE! I just made my first match smoke! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now to get it better set up to get it to LIGHT!

and remove a freckle. (JK)

Edit: Hmm, I just replaced my double AA's and I cant get the thing to light. I haven't run it too long... Ideas? It did get it to smoke. I dont think this thing is putting out 200mW... Closer to >100 I think!

Edit2: It shrinks (doesn't cut) sharpied saran wrap after 7-9 seconds... No noticeable heat when aimed at my hand.

Edit3: Grr! This is annoying... I want a bright laser, but having a burning laser is actually useful to me in my other hobbies. Does anyone have any opinions on the IR ebay diodes? Theres one guy selling 250, 500, and 1W diodes.

>100 mw meaning less than 100 mW... IIRC an 85 mW can light matches after a few seconds.

IR Diodes are very tempting... especially the part about sunglasses vs $50 WickedShades.

Edit: Just got it to light by taking the diode out of the casing... took about 1s...

Only running it very briefly at that level, now the diode doesn't produce ANY light! I seriously think it just died on me! :'(

The lens on the can is really discolored... I think thats my problem. The match wasn't that close enough to do that! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Is there any way to try and remove/resurface it?

Okay, I feel like a freakin idiot. I think that the gunk on there IS from the match-- I got a tiny bit of it off and its far brighter. Before I screw this up any more I am going to ask for your guys opinions on this...

I got gunk on one of mine too when I was burning electrical tape. I cleaned it by using a q-tip and windex but it took awhile. Having the diode too close to anything when burning will cause it to get dirty. Spray the q-tip with windex, don't spray the diode..lol

No, you should have something to grip the diode with like I explained to you before that will act as a heat sink. Melt the points where it is soldered, and quickly pull the board off. Don't worry about any solder that is left on the diodes legs.

Thanks Gazoo.

Question: If I had ran the diode for about 7 seconds (spaced apart) while the lens was gunkified, trying to figure out WTPF is going on, does that mean I just fried the innards?!? Cause I just cleaned it and its about as bright as a 5mW... :'( >:( :'( >:( :o :-[ :-/

thanks Gazoo for the tip. Um Xenodius, how close did you hold the match when u lit it? Just wondering
