Hey Crew,

This is my first time posting on this forum. I just got my first laser from Sci-Fi Lasers and absolutely love the thing. I got the 1.5w 445nm one, and must say I really enjoy it. Before that I had purchased a 400mW laser diode in an Aixiz module (the module is identical to the LPC-815 and is 650nm). The part I am struggling with is what driver should I get to power it with as the specs seemed to have some contradictions (not the best with electronics at the moment, but am learning) and what heat-sink and module should I purchase that would be effective.

Any help and links you all can offer would be greatly appreciated. The link to the exact module and diode I have is here:

650nm 400mW Red Laser Diode in Aixiz Module w Leads US Seller Fast SHIP | eBay

Also how powerful is 400mW in 650nm? Is it capable of being a burner?

Thanks in advanced!

Welcome to lpf. A welcome post will be nice. Read this post . It should be able to help you build the laser. For the driver, just get any driver, other than a boost driver, that give out a constant current of what the diode is rated for.

Hi Mogul
Welcome to the forum.
"Also how powerful is 400mW in 650nm?" Ummm, it is 400mW, sorry I just had too, just playin' with ya :D
Anywho, pretty much any laser over 100mW is a burner. The smaller in diameter the beam is, the more concentrated the beams energy is on the surface of the item you want to burn. So pay attention to the specs of the diode/module that will get.
A member above posted the link but it is not active, this might be easier to get to = http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/i-want-build-laser-thread-52972.html
Where are you from as that can determine if certain things can be sent to you or not.
Please poke around and see all the great stuff in the world of lasers. Be sure to use the white search bar at the bottom of the page as there is a wealth of information to see here. Remember to get proper safety laser goggles for the wavelength of your laser if it is over 5mW.
Enjoy, have fun and most importantly be safe.
BTW, Please be sure to click on this link for a chance(s) to win a laser of your choice!! :)

Thanks for the info Laser Chick. It's really just about finding the correct driver that I am worried about. I have found some good resources regarding other items. I just need to know really what the most important spec to look at is when selecting a driver, as most diodes don't have drivers that fit the EXACT specs. With the diode I posted above what may be the most effective driver, as I don't want to burn the Diode out. I didn't pay to much for it but still, don't like throwing money away. I am from the United States but haven't had issues with customs *knock on wood*.

I am interested in building lasers as the individual parts are extremely easy to ship on an idividual basis, and as far as I can tell aren't regulated. More specifically I live around the Chicago land area, so if any lives close by and could help me with this build I would much appreciate it.
