ok well i finally wanted to make a laser. but all i had were Cd burners. so i extracted a diode and now im
mounting into a Aixiz housing. i hope it works out. also, im going to try to turn it into a green laser,as i have 1 ktp crystal for a dx true 50mw. I' ll post pics as soon as im done. If anybody has suggestions please help me. Also I'm aware that its ir, so im using my camera to tell if it even works.

Good luck on making a green laser. You need 808nm for pumping YVO[sub]4[/sub].CD Burner diodes are 790nm. :P
Anyway, be careful with the current. That thing is probably good for about 100mW, don't push it as far as you would a red one if you want it to live.

You won't be able to get much green out of a 100mW diode, even if it was 1064nm. (you need 1064 to pump KTP if you want to get green... not 808nm) I wouldn't expect much out of that crystal set, either. :P

Well got everything set up, But no Light or ir ??
I guess i killed the diode :'(. Well its my first attempt.
So where can i buy those 1064nm diodes at ?

That sounds pretty ambitious for a first laser, you can't see infared lasers and alligning everything properly to make it a green is very difficult even for a pro. You can buy a dvd burner diode or even a burning HD-DVD diode (PHR-803t) for around 20$.

ok well i changed my mind. im going to build a Blu ray laser
I already have alot of empty hosts. so what i start with? i know i need a PHR-803t diode, and a aixiz housing. what all else do i need? driver battery ?? Thanks
all that help as I'm a noob at this, but i know there will be a good End Result when im done.

a ddl driver will work. You want 90 to 100ma going to the hd-dvd laser.

If you want to make it as easy as possible just buy a rkcstr driver around 80mA-100mA depending on how hard you want to drive the diode. After that here is a complete tutorial on building your laser:

1. Instal HD-DVD PHR-803T diode into Aixiz Module
2. Solder rkcstr driver onto diode leads

And that's basically it. Now you can put that into whatever host you want.

This thread has got me thinking. What if you passed 808nm laser light through a KTP directly. That would, in theory, emit 404nm light wouldn't it? Like a blu-ray that's 10 times harder to make! I think I need to try this.

I doubt that the KTP would lase if driven by 808nm directly.

I think the reason it won't work has something to do with the KTPs efficiency at doubling that frequency. Not to mention that you probably need special coatings to even have a shot, not the regular coating for frequency doubling 1064nm.

Btw, I said you need to pump 808nm into the YVO[sub]4[/sub] not the KTP.I know he said he had a KTP from a DX50 but I assumed he actually has a YVO-KTP assembly since that's how most pointers work.Though, there are 1064nm diodes right? :-/ Why aren't those being used? Are they so much more expensive? I mean, it would raise efficiency by a lot.

Well i have the whole dx true 50 laser. all the parts. But im Rma it and im sendign for my money back. my support is Nicole :o

There's a 1W diode for $70 and a 2W diode for $95 on ebay from snoctony, shipping included. Those would probably make good pumps, or just good for burning the heck out of black stuff :D That's gonna be my next project after the 803 pointer.

Same here! I'm going to use the 2 watt TO-3 diode because it will be easy to use, goggles for that thing will really set me back though :(

Ah I see. I was under the impression that KTP crystals doubled the frequency of any light passed through it. Never occured to me that it had an efficiency curve! ::)

That's what I was thinking. The blu-ray will be much cheaper for now.Besides, I'm gonna need a key switch and an LED indicator on that thing.Well, at least a key switch. But it'll be worth it.I could move to Australia and fight the spiders with an illegal weapon. :D

Wouldn't that be awesome? We could make all kinds of cool UV wavelengths like 325nm, 395nm, 404nm, 490nm (<-- that would be an awesome dpss blue!).
And just think about this: argon 488nm + KTP = 244nm!! BAM! suntan laser/cancer ray  :P Not to mention all the cool fluorescence effects with UVB. ::)
