The conversion of an old computer to a burning laser is one of my favorite DIY projects out there, and it's something I've done a few times now. As old computers are full of goodies, they contain most of the parts needed for a DIY red laser build. For most computers, you get a 250mW red laser diode from the DVD burner, a nice PSU, and some good heatsinks. The only extra parts needed are an AixiZ module and and LM317/resistor, which are only a couple bucks. For this particular build, there was no DVD burner, so I just used a $2.50 open can red laser diode, but you get the idea. :p

This video shows the building process, as well as some burning tricks. Enjoy!!

Sometimes there will even be an LM1117 and
suitable resistors inside. If there is a
circuit board with a large enough trace,
the solder mask can be lightly sanded off
and used as the driver.

Nice video, i need to try to build one myself, good thing i have a gf who works with computers, im sure she can get some parts for me. :D
