I'm looking for a laser power meter.

I will only buy a complete set up ready to use out of the box. I would like it to have quick read time (don't like the 20-30 seconds for accuracy) and semi portably would be nice.
I need it to read up to 5 watts for my purpose.
Also if there is anything you guys think is important please advise me and submit links if you have something you can contribute.

price I'd like to keep around or under $300 but if more expensive stuff is the way to go that's what I'll buy.

If you can't wait for Radiant's new model coming out in very early 2015 I would try and grab an Ophir head. Just hook up a voltmeter and a couple of 9V batteries and it's done.

That or wait until you find a used one. They come up for sale occasionally at your price range. You'll probably be looking at double your price range for a new one.

You may aswell buy the ophir head mwacky is selling if you do what arg said. He wants to keep the sale in the US and it is cheap.

Great advice ARG, as long as you have the Ophir head, you can use the battery and voltmeter approach until you find the system you want.
This is what I use, it's portable, accurate, and will handle most any power you throw at it with proper heatsinking.
Also, if your meter is capable, you can capture average and maximum readings. About the only thing you can't do is datalogging.

Thanks guys. I have though about the voltmeter approach many times just have NO idea how to use one as a power meter, what setting etc.

Would the Ophir head do all the work and the voltmeter just give readings?
and the Ophir head needs 9volts to work is all?
What connects where? Does the head have wires for power and readings out the back?

BowTie Guy... is that just a power source in the black box?

Now I remember why I wanted plug and play ...I could ask questions for weeks on any subject .

Sorry for not knowing anything here

From what i have seen of these its literally 2 9v batteries hooked up via these connection

I would assume they are run in series so you would connect positive/red off battery number one to negative/black on battery number 2.

Then run the pos/neg left over to the ophir head to power it. Then run the wires from the multimeter to the ophir head.

Starlight, basically it's just 2 9v batteries. Here's a pic of the inside of mine, and the circuit that I used to build it.
It's just a radio shack box with a on/off switch, and some jacks for my meter plugs.

The Ophir does come with a 4 wire harness that plugs into the back of the Ophir and attachs as shown in the diagram.

Yup. All the Isis does is convert the analog signal to digital, plus a chip for USB communications.

Don't sell them anymore, unfortunately. Very few people buy them so it's not practical to build 10 at a time. Once I broke even I stopped selling them, since I would have to ask higher prices if I bought parts in 3x quantities.

That sucks. How they didn't sell makes no sense.

And there was this lpm for $60 if you want something untill you figure out exactly what you want.

Thanks everyone.

ARG after looking around the forum I keep going back and looking at your Rubicon X system. This set up looks like the way to go. Do you still offer the Rubicon X LPM systems? My price range went up .

Most of the Ophir heads are still within the 3% spec, even after many years in storage.

If the seal on the bag has been broken that's a different story. I've found a couple heads that arrived unsealed and were a bit out of spec.
