Aqwest proposes to develop a novel, compact and rugged high-peak power blue laser in the 0.45-0.49 m range. The innovative blue laser is based on a frequency-quadrupling of 1.9-μm laser output from ceramic Tm:Lu2O3, a novel high-performance solid-state laser (SSL) material that is new becoming commercially available.

This is very interesting to see. Thulium has some very interesting properties as a gain element where you can get a "two for one" upconversion process that can make it very efficient. A group at LLNL is pushing for Tm:YLF as a gain material for a kW average power petawatt class laser. During my literature search on the topic I saw that Lu2O3 has some of the highest thermal property figure of merit allowing it to be driven at very high average power without damage. Curious to see what sort of average power blue spectrum you can get from this arrangement.
