Lol! I did try turning it up to about 100mA in desperation. There are other things about the diode that puzzle me though, like the way I had to connect it to get it to work. At this point, I'm happy to have Gazoo take a look at it. Not that I think it can be repaired, but perhaps we can learn a little more about this diode...for the next time!

This also raises another question...Since the 'normal' negative was not being used, would the diode still work if the negative was connected to BOTH, the normal negative, as well as the pin that says 'not used'? I mean, using a DDL driver, the negative side of the battery would connect to that pin, even if a wire wasn't soldered to it. Unless I were to isolate the heatsink from the MXDL body.

I just want to understand for the next time. If anybody can explain these things to me, please help...

the pinout of this sony LD does not seem commonly available, but it's possible that the die is isolated from the case. DL-LS5017 of SANYO looks similar to what you have got there in terms of pin connection: http://www.laserdiode.ca/detay/pdf/dl-ls5017.pdf

Nice find! So, if the die is isolated from the case, do you think it would be ok for pins 2 and 3, to both be connect to the negative (using a DDL driver)? Or, should the diode case be kept isolated from the negative side of the battery?

one of the points of having dies isolated from cases is to be able to mount the latter on metal surfaces /normally system ground/ without electrical isolation considerations, for instance, when the diode is fed from a current sinking regulator (LD+ to +Vee, LD- to regulator output), but the heatsink is tied to ground. so, yes- i think it would be ok.

phenol, in looking at that Sanyo spec sheet, and the picture of the pin out, is number 1 pin the negative? Or, number 3? Or, does it matter? What do you think?

1- Anode - positive
3-Cathode - negative

it does matter which is which. the breakdown reverse voltage is 2V. if you connect the diode in reverse at higher than 2V, it will become conductive and possibly die.

Crap man...if 1 is positive and 3 is negative, that could be why it died. I had the 3 pin positive, because that is the positive pin for the Sony/Senkat diodes, as well as the open can diodes...

Oh, wait a minute, that's the top view...so, the #1 positive pin is the same as the red diodes correct?

guys according to data sheet, i think this is how it should be, correct me if im wrong with this theoretical schematics.

yes, #1 correcponds to #1 in reds. #3 corresponds to #2 in reds.
#3 in reds (NC) = #2 BluRay
jayrob, was the LD heatsinked in the burner? if so, was its cladding electrically connected to ground?

so guys, with this how can we make DDLs LD driver reverse to negative regulation from the original positive regulation?

we dont have to reverse the driver. all we need to do is connect the LD properly. DDLs driver sources current to LD's anode and LD's cathode is connected to ground(-) of battery. I cant be 101% sure, but i think that since the die is isolated from the case, the case need not be isolated from heatsink/chassis ground.

you mean the die isolated in the case must not connected to the negative body?can we make the heatsink remain to the LD diode but away or with rubber gap from the negative body host?

again, i think that the LD would be ok if its case is not isolated from the heatsink and the heatsink itself is not isolated from the negative/positive or whatever potential the host body has

well, you have left nothing to chance - almost everything is isolated. it would still be correct, even better, if you omit the rubber tube and thermally couple the heatsink to the body, as the air circulation within the cavity may be insufficient to absorb heat from the heatsink

We're saying that's not needed. Connect the + and - pins on the diode correctly to the regulator and it doesnt matter where the hell you connect the case to.
