I have read the 'so you want to build a laser' thread and looked around some more but there are a lot of first laser guides. I know basically nothing so far except the pure basics. I did buy a soldering gun, but nothing else so far. Which guide would be the best for me? Thanks for helping.

I would start with a jayrob host (see the pro shop), a PHR-803T diode (405nm, ~100mW), and a rkcstr or DrLava driver (also in the pro shop).

Upside is you get the full build experience, and if you break anything the parts are cheap to replace. With a little searching you should be able to find all the details you need to pull of this build.

You might have already seen seen them but if you haven't check out the 3 links in my sig. 2 are the best guides on this forum and Jayrob's tutorials are great for learning as well!!

Also, if you don't want to source the parts individually, and worry if they're compatible, try here -

Laser Hosts and Laser Kits - Items - OdicForce Lasers Online Shop

Any of those red kits will be a great starter laser that comes with full written instructions, (with pictures too!!! ;) ), and is a one stop buy. I would go for the higher power one. Simply because it gives you more options and the even if you make a mistake with the driver, it shouldn't kill the diode because it should take it. They come preset at 200mA which will give you about 100mW, give or take a bit. Leave it as it is to start, then turn it up later!

There are a few reviews, (one by myself), in the, "Reviews Section", for these kits.

They're cheap enough to not mind getting it wrong but success will only drive you to buy better parts and build better lasers.

Good luck.
