Quick questions.

Does anyone know if CR123 batteries are the same size as LIR123?

and

What do the CR/LIR/RCR mean in front of the numbers?

Thanks.

I don't know what the letters mean, but the numbers are the physical dimensions of the cell

for example

a 18650 cell is 18mm in diameter, and 65mm in length.

Most likely not. cr2 and cr123 is a standard disposable battery, usually rated at 3.0v

The rcr123 battery is a rechargeable cr123 cell usually 3.7v, and when fully charged they are 4.2v
The lir123 is probably the same as a rcr123. Just named differently since a rcr123 cell is usually a lithium ion rechargeable cell.

The only way to know for sure, is to just check the voltage.

If I recall, the CR123 is also very popular with mac owners since it was the PRAM battery on most desktops ever since the PowerPC 7200 (and earlier) all the way to the G5. More recent macs nowadays use the small PC-style 3v quarter-sized lithium cell.

If you have an old mac lying around, check to see if the battery inside is a CR123, it may still be good. The lithium ones lasted a long time.

Well, thanks for the help, but, are they the same size physically?

I can't tell if rpaloalto was responding to me, or kingdave2357.

The number is the "casing" size/shape so in theory they're all 16 by 34mm (CR123 = 16340) BUT the li-ion protection circuit adds a few mm to the length of protected batteries, so there will be some slight differences between protected and unprotected cells.

Sorry mrbubl3s, yes they are the same size. And like charliebruce pointed out. If you buy a protected cell, it will be about 2mm longer.

Just be careful, If your trying to replace a cr123 cell with a rechargeable battery.
like I pointed out in my post. Most rcr123 cells are usually 3.7v and and not the 3.0v as are cr123.

Here is a link to a 3.0v rcr123 at DX
