Well today i saw in a newspaper that some guy had been arrested for misusing a laser. In the article it said if you were caught with a laser, you would have to spend 12 months in prison or face a $4000 fine. When i get a job and make some money, i plan to buy a telescope so when the police come to my house i show them the telescope and say i was star gazing :)

How was the guy misusing the laser? I'm guessing more aircraft related idiocy/

Correct.
I was wondering what the laws are in Australia to, have they been changed or was that law always around but not enforced until now(the law of using one not shingy them on planes), I dont want to use my laser until I am certain.

I would wait half a year or so until the laser 'hype' cools down. Remember SARS? Yeah... it's still around but meh.

post count 69. Giggity giggity goo.

i'd say no since lasers are banned and the cops are gonna start treating them as if they were firearms.. buy box style lasers from trusted members of this forum... it will be more safe through customs IMO because it doesnt look like a laser pointer when they scan it. :-/

I don't believe we're in any danger.

You have a laser on you, as long as it's legal and you weren't in fact doing something stupid with it they can't do anything.

The only reason that guy and the guy who got 2 years or whatever got in trouble is because they had evidence they were pointing them at aircraft.

by the way i just found the same article at my dad's restuarant, and it said the guy was pointing the laser at cars and pedestrians.

"Laser lunatics face $5000 fines"
WTF! >:(
"Police will have powers to frisk people they suspect of carrying lasers and those without reason to have them - such as educators, architects or astronomers - will be fined up to $5000.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma said today the Government would ban the most powerful laser pointers and make it a summary offence to carry any laser pointer without a lawful reason.

Class three and four laser pointers will be declared prohibited weapons and carrying them could attract a maximum penalty of 14 years' jail, he said."
The people planning this law in Australia are retarded for 3 reasons.
1-It will do NOTHING to stop the laser attacks because they idiots already have the lasers.
2-$5000 fine for ANY class 3 pointers is ridiculous. That even includes those cheap keychain reds.
3-They are effectively labeling countless people with various class IIIa laser pointers as "Lunatics who are capable of mass murder" Never mind the fact that anyone with a car can turn into a crazed murderer and drive through a large crowd of people killings dozens.

Looks like you can easily avoid this by using astronomy as an excuse though. Just need to keep a telescope around and you have a legit reason to have lasers ::)

*grabs out the telescope and keeps it by his side while playing with lasers* Geesh this is freaking rediculous.... Our government SUCKS, what are they gonna ban next, SPOONS??????????????? Yes, i'm pissed off. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

You know its only going to get worse, its a matter of time before these meatheads start to get crafty. For all the good things there are, an equal ammount of bad exists. There will be many first's for the bad, as there have been many first's for the good. And the stronger the lasers get, the more attractive the ideas of missusing them become. I dont even want to think of what future stories lie ahead. I havent heard of it happening, but I dont know what I would do if I were driving on the highway and some goof on the overpass decides to flash me.  :-/
