Power is measured in Watts.So mW rating is power.1mW will always be the same power no matter the color/wavelength. ::)

Exactly. If you have a 100mW red or blue, makes no difference.

Yet there are some factors to consider. Depending on the colour of the material, some wavelengths might get absorbed better than others. Also, burning needs focussing, and the smaller the wavelength, the smaller the possible focus. Yet both those effects are negligible, especially considering burning with a pen style laser. There it is just "a watt is a watt".

The difference comes with visibility. With an equally bright red and green, the red will burn better. Or the other way round, if a greenie and a red burn about the same, the green laser will be way brighter.

You're gonna have a really rough time focusing to a spot in the size of the wavelength with the aixiz lens :D With regular "household" optics , there isn't going to be much difference in the spot size you're gonna get(or maybe thats why people can light matches with 25mW blu-rays??? hmmmm :-/).

Another interesting factoid is that because a photon's energy is greater at shorter wavelengths, a greater number of photons will be required to produce the same amount of energy at higher wavelengths. To produce the same amount of total energy at 400nm would require 57% less photons than at 700nm for instance.

A shorter wavelength will have a smaller focal point, higher power concentration, and ultimately more "burning power." This is of course assuming the object at the receiving end absorbs all wavelengths equally.

Basically that. Shorter wavelength = more energy/burning power.

That's why I want a gamma ray laser.
What kind of power would a 100mW Gamma laser have? :eek:

More energy per photon, but less photons, so same power :-/

The power of a 100mW gamma ray laser will be 100mW ;D

The only thing that gives it more "burning potential" is the smaller focal point, but that's only if you achieve that smaller focal point that can only be the size of the wavelength.So if you have a 100mW IR and a 100mW UV with a 3mm dot, both TEM00 , they'll stil burn the same(not considering absorbsion) , right? :-/
