I am an artist based in California USA. I am searching for someone who can build me a custom laser.

These are my requirements:

-Custom lens to emit my art work/design which I can submit in any format required.

-Mobile and transportable.

-Battery powered or battery adaptable.

-Powerful enough to burn design into wood, concrete and glass over a period of time when mounted steady.

If you think you can fufill these services, please contact me.

Thank you

Victor Demeester.

What do you mean by custom lens fir your artwork? Like those lenses that emit smiley faces and whatnot? If so no one here will be able to create that. Everything else would be simple though.

Sadly, that is what i am referring to. Any suggestions as to how to find someone to create such a lens?

Thank you for the input.

I imagine if its not something mass produced it would be extremley expensive to make. Have you looked at other options like a laser projector? It moves or traces the bdot around fast enoigh to epar as a solid lines and images.

Anoyher thing to note is anything that will burn even wood would be two powerfull to observe without safety glasses. Etching glass is usally done with IR (no visable) co2 lasers of poweres well outside of anything hand held. They are also much larger systems and need active water cooling.

Their lenses are just standard lenses of different sizes and focal points for various application. I didnt see anthing on there about the type of lens you would need.

Sadly that will be an issue. Unless you are willing to have this thing on wheels. You will not be able to have something like this "portable". The reason for that is. You are probably looking for a C02 laser >40W or a decently sized YAG laser. Neither of which are really portable and both are extremely dangerous. Both use high voltage, water cooling (which doesnt mix with high voltage) and would probably need a battery twice the weight of the laser system itself.

You will also have little luck with glass as it would explode (I know this from personal experience) from thermal stress. Concrete? I'm not even sure you could do that without some sort of CNC type of machine. Wood? That one is a piece of cake but you will have an issue with possible fires.

If you are going to be creating this art publicly, it would also be a huge eye safety AND/OR fire hazard.

You would also not be able to make those dinky designs you wanted so easily.

"IF" someone could even build this based on your specifications. You are probably looking at $10,000+ easily and probably months of waiting time.

Sorry, but unless you change your specs, you wont be able to find anything you are looking for.

I see. The power issue did come to mind and a projector sounds like a good alternative. I came across a thread where it seems the person is looking for something similar.
Google Answers: Manufacturers of custom laser-pointer pattern generators
Im currently contacting LDS which was mentioned in the above thread.
Hypothetically speaking, if i were to obtain a custom lens, would there be any sort of portable laser that would etch into material over time? It doesn't need to be instant. Up to an hour would be ideal. Could we fit a external power source to a portable laser to maintain power during the duration of the engraving?

Now, a projector sounds like I could bypass the lens issue all together. Can a projector be powerful enough to burn into materials over time?

Thanks for the speedy responses.
Greatly appreciated!

lasers burning does not work like branding iron with lens that project images that can be burned into things

Well thats pretty clear! Thank you for the info. Looks like i will have to find an alternative.

Anything pirtable concrete and glass will be out of the equation. A slow scan speed with a projector with a decent powere laser would ne able to engrave wood. But like jeffrey said it woukd not be eye safe and a potential fire hazard.

Gotcha gotcha...Iv been researching many option to engrave my designs such as various corrosive acids, lasers, etc..
Seems like lasers are out.
I greatly appreciate your responses and helping me clear this up.
