Hey guys
I lurk here pretty often and I finally got something cool to share with you guys!

I volunteer to guide tours of the large binocular telescope observatory (LBTO)

Recently I was asked to be a plane spotter so they wouldn't blow up any planes with their new ~55watt 532nm 6 laser focusing system

I arrived at the LBTO at 5pm, it was cloudy and at the dew point so they couldn't open the scope up so it looked like my trip up there would be in vain

So I waited
6 hours of waiting later and it finally cleared up!

I stepped outside into the 14 degree weather and gave the all clear

a few seconds later the fired the lasers

It was a fun night and I talked to a bunch of scientists about lasers and optic systems all night long

here is the official writeup on the event:

It's happening at LBT : ARGOS first laser propagation!

Wow... Thanks for the pics. That is beautiful how the beams converge . 55w of dreamy 532

You're right, that is definitely very cool!
Thank you for sharing!

its even more impressive
they had to align not 2 but 6 lasers!

they turned on the lasers took a photo
turned them off
lowered the scopes to the ground and adjusted the lasers by hand
then evacuated the scope chamber and turned the system back on and repeated until they were alined

The entire building is glowing. And I'm sure that report was just someone who happened to be looking. Had to be visible for far more then that. Truly awesome
