Hey everyone,
As I'm about to make my reentry into this hobby and the topic has come up on the forums in several places I thought why not make a thread for it. Feel free to post your stories, gear, etc!

Last time I had truly shot a bow was when I was seven years old in boyscout camp. I wasn't a particularly good shot but I enjoyed it very much. Being a suburban NJ kid I was not allowed to practice archery outside of camp so it fell to the wayside as things so often do.

I found an old beat up 35lb fiberglass recurve selfbow here in my wife's family house and some beat up 22" youth arrows and took the set out for a few shots now and then over the past three years. I had since planned on getting my own bow and arrows (and everything else) when able after rekindling my love of archery with the crappy bow. Recently I was target shooting and the nocks broke off after firing! These arrows never flew straight nor far as they were truly pieces of garbage, but now they are not even functional.

And so time has finally come to place an order for my first real bow and accessories. It should arrive in a week or so. My bow is a Samick Sage 62" (one inch shorter than I am!) right hand take down recurve at 50lb draw weight at 28". I got a great deal on a brand new one with lots of accessories from a reputable shop.

Right now I'm trying to find a good online source for arrows. I'll be doing target shooting for quite some while as there are so many damned hoops and fees involved in getting a hunting license, so target points are all I need. I would like to later grab a set of hunting arrows with broadheads as well.

I have a rather short draw length, as I am also rather short at 5'3". My specs are as follows:

Draw Length: 24" (23" from chest to fingertips +1")
Draw Weight Derating: 4" = 8lbs.
Minimum Arrow Size: 25"

Since my draw weight comes out to 42lbs after derating and my draw length is relatively short it is a bit difficult to find the right size arrows. Easton seems to make several models though and their prices seem reasonable, so they are what I am looking in to.

So far I have found ArcheryCountry.com which has lots of options and positive reviews. Unfortunately their ordering page seems to have an error preventing orders from being completed. I emailed them about it.

For target shooting I am looking in to size 1816 Easton XX75 Blues with 2.3" 3D Duravane fletchings, 7" neon yellow shaft wrapping, RPS inserts and points, and glued in standard nocks. Cut to size (26") at no extra charge a dozen comes out to only $85.96.

I checked all over eBay and Amazon but no quality arrows are to be found for a better price. Sure, there are tons of raw shafts for cheap, but finding ones the right spine and with all the bits installed seems to be impossible.

For hunting I found that size 1916 Easton Legacy arrows are right in my budget as well at nearly the same price as the target arrows I want.

I checked them out and man they are WAY more expensive than the place I found. Plus it seems they don't sell any completed arrows (even minus the points). They don't even carry the target arrows I found and none of the ones I found there came in the right size/spine for me.

You are correct,'I always made my own arrows, anyhow there is also a forum called archery talk you can find great deals there as well.

I'm not a huge archery buff, I enjoy it but don't know much about the hobby.

I own a simple recurve, haven't used it in a couple years unfortunately. I take it with me on portage trips. May go on another week long trip soon.

I have a fairly large draw so I use 34" arrows. It's a pain to find cheap Al arrows that long (I think the standard is 32"?) so I use carbon.
