LOL i got my nova x65 taken away by the mall cops because i was shining it at the movie theater at the time they never said
any thing about bringing lasers in but that changed shortly after. But at the time it sure freaked people out

P.S. sorry about the off topic story :'(

Not too smart.
I got my Galileo taken away by a deputy of a school once. I was pointing it at blank walls and the sky at a football game. Not even at people. He said he was legally authorized to shoot anyone playing with a green laser ::). Haha... I got it back, but it was still lame.
Cops ARE legally authorized to shoot you if you point lasers at them. The question is whether pointing at a wall and sky could be considered threatening to the cop. Personally I think he was just bsing you to scare you and make sure you don't bring it back to school.

I have to agree that schools have some crazy rules about lasers. Back in Middle school I had one of those 1-2 mw red pointers taken away for pointing it around during an assembly. They said that I was endangering people and could permanently blind someone with it and a bunch of other bs ;D

Pissed me off because it was back when the reds cost like $20.

Chiming in a bit late here, but I wanted to note that a cop is not authorized to shoot you for shining a laser at him or her. At least not in the US. They can only shoot you if you pose a threat that a reasonable person would consider serious or deadly. If he knows it's a laser pointer, then that wouldn't apply. If he thinks it's attached to a gun as a sighting device, or you're using it to blind him so you can rape and kill him... then he'd be able to shoot you.

... ;D
But most cops will still probably assume that it's attached to a gun. That's a reason people don't like being hit with a laser-regardless of the power. They might not have the right, but they don't really care. They'll say that they had no idea if it was attached to a gun or not.
